MY VESPA SCOOTER CRASH, PLASTIC SURGERY + RECOVERY PICS

*YES, I HAD A HELMET ON* Stacked my Vespa on Nov 27 2007. Hit a stopped car at around 80kmh (50mph), facebutted the dash, flipped and went through the rear windscreen face first. She’d stopped in a lane with a no-stopping restriction while I was behind her changing lanes with my head turned. It was hot that day so I left my full-faced helmet at home and wore the open face helmet with jeans and a shirt. Oops! Only spent two days in hospital after the doctors told me I would be there for up to 6 months. Was due to fly to the US on Nov 29th but put it back until Dec 17 which with hindsight was a little too early to go. Finished up with 4 full-thickness tears to the face with my bottom lip almost torn completely off, very deep puncture wound on my hand from brake lever, two very black eyes (lucky I had my sunnies on), glass and gravel all through my face which had to be picked and then sandpapered out, bleeding on the frontal and left temporal lobes of the brain, severe cuts and abrasions to both legs, teeth were forced back into head and very crudely wired back into the wrong spots (the guy who cut out the wire said it’s the most brutal thing he’s ever seen), a large hole above the right collarbone from the mirror stem, severe shoulder + elbow damage to both sides and a fair headache. Much better now, I can almost feel my face

@soniqLCD I was pretty right after about 2-3 weeks. That photo with the CPK box in the background was taken 18 days after my accident.

@winterstellar I know, if I’d worn a full-faced helmet and a leather jacket I would have got up and walked away. Thye most damage done was to my mouth area, which the full-face would have protected.

@rrip1 He gave me a miss for a few weeks and went back to sleeping with your Dad. Now go back to watching your crappy Fleetwood Mac videos and leave my comments section alone, Grandpa.
No wonder you’re alone at 47. I’ve never met a 47yo male “cat lady” before. Good luck with that.

I was approaching an underpass following a woman in a sedan in the right lane. We had to merge left and she begins while I do a shoulder check. I confirm there is no one in the left lane but as I turn my head back I find that she is hard on the brakes. I think she was startled as my bike would have been quite loud when under the bridge and she may have thought there was someone in the left lane to avoid. Little damage and no injuries but, I know, s**t happens in a flash. I am glad you are OK.

@calineophyte That’s pretty much what happened here. Right as I was about to overtake her I did the shoulder check and there was a car in my blind spot, so even if I’d seen her stop I was still in trouble. That sudden stop when you smash is a bit of a shock.
I found it worse on my suzuki, it was black and hard to see so I’d spend half my time on the brakes waiting for the next car to pull out in front of me from a sidestreet. I’ve given up now, I value my legs too much
    Look after yourself mate

@Fufino77 I can’t remember too much of the accident, but remember everything from the moment I was wheeled into hospital.
My jaw was fine but I had a bit of trouble with my teeth. I knew there was something wrong with the mouth wiring when I woke up after the operation. The staff kept telling me it was normal, but it just didn’t feel right. The pain became unbearable and I went to a maxiofacial surgeon who fixed it.
I made a 14 hour flight only 17 days after, and was almost fully recovered.
